Rock Chronology #100: Gimme Shelter

“Gimme Shelter”, The Rolling Stones, 1969.

The Rolling Stones are one of the most amazing Rock bands to grace the planet Earth. They are actually so pivotal to Rock’s existence that I’m not sure if we would have Rock music if there never was a band called “The Rolling Stones”. Furthermore they went on to make hit records over the course of decades, a feat which very few of even the greatest bands can claim. That is why I am not speaking lightly when I say, to me, this is the best song The Rolling Stones ever made. It is just so much awesome concentrated into one song.

This song includes the vocals of Merry Clayton (along with Mick Jagger). It’s the lead track from their Let It Bleed album which peaked at #1 in the UK, and #3 in the US.
