Rock Chronology #146: These Eyes

“These Eyes”, The Guess Who, 1969.

The Guess Who were a band that had been successful in Canada for several years, but before this song they had only minor success in other countries. One of their earliest Canadian hits was a cover of the song “Shankin’ All Over”. Instead of giving the band’s name at the time the record company simply put on the album “The Guess Who”. After that the name stuck. (I guess the record company was hoping people would confuse them with The Beatles or something.)

While The Guess Who would really hit their stride in 1970, they had their first top 10 international hit with this song. “These Eyes” peaked at #6 on the US singles chart. The album it was from Wheatfield Soul only peaked at #45.
