Rock Chronology #151: Venus

“Venus”, Shocking Blue, 1969.

I’m just about ready to start into the 70’s, but I realized I left out a pretty significant song from 1969. Shocking Blue was a Dutch band that managed to have a few hits that broke out of their own country and spread throughout Europe and the US. In particular this was one of the few Rock songs that managed to reach the USSR. The Soviets at the time were very careful to keep out music from the US and UK, but I guess they figured it was ok to let in a Dutch song (even if it was in English). Consequently this song was huge in the Soviet Union, because it was one of the few Rock songs they had.

This song managed to spend three weeks at #1 on the US singles charts, but it only peaked at #8 in the UK.
