Rock Chronology #174: American Woman

“American Woman”, The Guess Who, 1970.

“American Woman” comes from Canadian Band, The Guess Who. Considering the album it appeared on was also called American Woman, there was never any doubt what they thought there strongest song was. The album version of this song has an acoustic guitar into that lasts for a minute or so, while the single just goes right into the main part of the song. (The version above is from the album).

There were a fair amount of people who thought this was an anti-American song. For example when, The Guess Who were invited to play at the White House, the First Lady, Pat Nixon, asked them not to play “American Woman”. Ironically this song peaked at #1 in the US while it only peaked at #19 in the UK. The album American Woman peaked at #9 in the US.
