Rock Chronology #226: Cry Baby

“Cry Baby”, Janis Joplin, 1971.

“Cry Baby” was originally recorded by blues singer Garnet Simms back in 1963. However the Janis Joplin version is the definitive version of the song. It comes from her Pearl album which spent an impressive 9 weeks at the top of the US album charts! It was released in January of 1971, so it basically shut out all of the top albums of 1970 for those 9 weeks including Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water which was the best selling album of the decade (not to mention acts like Led Zeppelin, George Harrison, The Beatles, Santana, CCR, Jesus Christ Superstar, etc…). It’s not an album to be taken lightly.
