Rock Chronology #36: Somebody To Love

“Somebody To Love”, Jefferson Airplane, 1967.

This single was released on April Fool’s Day in 1967. The single peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album it appeared on Surrealistic Pillow peaked at #3.

Jefferson Airplane’s success seemed to really take off after the singer, Grace Slick, joined the group. The song is actually written by Grace’s brother-in-law Darby Slick. They were in a band called The Great Society which had previously recorded a different version of “Somebody To Love”. (They also recorded a different version of “White Rabbit”.) Both Jefferson Airplane and The Great Society were somewhat successful in the club scene, but their sounds really took off once they were mixed together via Grace Slick in Jefferson Airplane

Jefferson Airplane has also got to be the most intentionally psychedelic band I’ve seen. Other bands at this time were like, “No…uh…our songs aren’t really about drugs. They’re about uh…uhm…something else?” With Jefferson Airplane it’s more like, “Buy our album because we sing about drugs.” 😀

  2. Aw, this was an exceptionally good publish. Inside thought I want to put in publishing similar to this moreover – consuming time and express effort to produce a very good article… what am i allowed to say… I just procrastinate loads and for no reason often have something done.
